Social media sites typically have minimum age limits, yet many young individuals manage to bypass these restrictions. In response, Instagram is currently experimenting with utilizing artificial intelligence to verify whether underage users are accurately reporting their ages on the platform.
For some time, Meta has utilized artificial intelligence to evaluate users’ ages, but the company will now actively search for teenage accounts believed to be used by individuals below the required age.
Should a user be discovered to falsify their age, their account will be automatically changed to a teenager account, entailing specific limitations.
Teen profiles come with privacy settings enabled by default, and direct messaging capabilities are confined to individuals they follow or who have an established connection with them. Moreover, “adult-oriented content,” including clips of altercations or promotions for beauty treatments, will face restrictions.
Teenagers using Instagram beyond 60 minutes will get a prompt indicating “sleep mode” has been activated. In this mode, IGnotifications are disabled and automatic replies are sent to incoming direct messages.
These enhanced precautions have been introduced amid growing oversight of how social media firms affect the mental health and overall wellbeing of younger users.
For tech-savvy teenagers trying to circumvent these protections, Meta says it educates its artificial intelligence to search for indicators such as the kind of content being watched and shared, details from user profiles, and the date an account was established, all to assist in establishing the actual age of the account holder.
