Earlier this offseason, the New York Jets decided to release Aaron Rodgers, which caused quite a commotion during the NFL offseason centered around his free agent situation. The main speculation was whether Rodgers would join the Pittsburgh Steelers or decide to retire instead. Since Rodgers remained undecided about joining the Steelers, it appeared likely that Pittsburgh might explore alternative options for acquiring a quarterback.
The Steelers possessed the 21st pick in the NFL Draft, and numerous people anticipated they might choose Shedeur Sanders as their next franchise quarterback. Should the Steelers have drafted Sanders, this could imply that Rodgers may soon retire. However, when the opportunity arose to take the Colorado player at selection number 21, the team opted instead to select Oregon’s defensive tackle Derrick Harmon.
This choice made by Pittsburgh might suggest that the management didn’t have strong feelings for Sanders. However, it could equally imply that they’re aware Rodgers is destined to join the Steelers soon.
While there have been no official statements from either the Steelers’ organization or Rodgers himself about this situation, the implications of the recent draft selection seem quite telling.
If Pittsburgh was positive that Rodgers would retire, it would have made plenty of sense for the Steelers to use their first-round pick on Sanders, especially since they don’t have a second-round pick to use on a quarterback.
Similar to Rodgers, we’ll gain more insight into the situation once he deems appropriate. The seasoned player marches to the rhythm of his own drummer and has not altered this behavior as of yet.
