Georgia Tech has been searching for a suitable right tackle through the transfer portal, and today they found their man. Offensive tackle Malachi Carney from South Alabama has decided to commit to Georgia Tech. He will bring valuable experience to the position of right tackle for the team.
As per 247Sports rankings, Carney ranks as the No. 6 offensive tackle available in the transfer portal. Standing at 6’4” and weighing 310 pounds, this lineman spent two seasons playing for the Jaguars before taking part in an impressive 855 plays last year, based on Pro Football Focus data. His final evaluation included an overall score of 59.0, featuring individual grades such as 64.7 for pass blocking and 66.6 for run blocking. During his time in 2023, Carney participated in 317 snaps and concluded with an aggregate rating of 50.5, which comprised scores like 38.4 for pass block proficiency and 64.8 for run-blocking effectiveness.
Currently, the PFF statistics might not impress you greatly, but they can be viewed as an indication of a young player who improved with increased playtime over the previous season. Carney experienced a substantial rise in his snap count and witnessed a significant uptick in his pass-blocking rating.
In the spring, offensive line coach Geep Wade discussed the right tackle position, emphasizing that this was an area of focus for them.
“Yeah, but (Jameson) Riggs is at right and does some good things. It’s consistency is going to be a key for him. Behind him is Jordan Floyd, and then we got Peyton Joseph behind him. So all three of those are freshmen, whether they’re redshirt or just here. So they’re all young and we tell our guys every day to be honest with you guys like youth is not an excuse You know, we we’ve got to have game reps out here at practice walk -throughs so every reps invaluable to those guys because they are talented they are they are talented, but we’ve got to mature at a faster rate because for you know, it’s gonna be August. So we’ve got to have a little bit more maturity out of that group. ”
Carney will have a leg up in experience over Jameson Riggs, Jordan Floyd, and Peyton Joseph, but he will have to earn his spot this fall.
This is the third big transfer portal addition for the Yellow Jackets in the past week. Last weekend, they added Penn State cornerback Jon Mitchell and Colorado safety Savion Riley through the portal.
Mitchell was a redshirt freshman this season but appeared in six games for the Nittany Lions. He posted five tackles and was named the Special Teams Player of the Game vs SMU in December. His best game came against Kent State, where he made two tackles. The Nittany Lions have a really good cornerback room mixed with a lot of superb athletes. Mitchell now lands an ideal spot with the Yellow Jackets and could be a contributor this season for Georgia Tech.
During his time at Mandarin High School in Jacksonville, Florida, Mitchell excelled as a highly-rated four-star cornerback. According to 247Sports, he ranked as the nation’s No. 26 player at his position. Despite receiving scholarship offers from prestigious programs like Alabama, Florida, and Miami, among others, Mitchell opted to join Penn State University. His standout performance included leading his team to an impressive 11-4 record during his final year, culminating in participation in the state championship match. In that pivotal season, Mitchell recorded stats such as 71 total tackles, 15 deflections, six tackles resulting in losses, along with intercepting four passes. Recognized for his exceptional skills, he received Defensive MVP accolades both in 2021 and 2022; additionally, he garnered all-city recognition twice—in 2022 and again in 2023. Furthermore, Mitchell was honored with selections to both the All-Gateway Conference and first-team all-district teams consecutively across two years: 2022 and 2023.
If you review his high school record, Mitchell shines due to his exceptional handling of the ball and his instinctive playmaking abilities. His talent for interrupting passes and accurately predicting opponents’ routes often leads to takeaways and advantageous positions for his team. After graduating high school, he garnered recognition from all national recruitment platforms, earning a four-star rating according to ON3, 247Sports, and ESPN.
