YouTube TV Set to Unveil Enhanced Custom Multiview Options

In the upcoming weeks, Google’s YouTube TV plans to introduce a new app feature that will enable broadcasters to create personalized multi-view setups extending beyond current capabilities.

At present, YouTube TV restricts its multi-view feature primarily to sports and news channels. It provides predefined multi-view setups featuring networks such as ESPN, CNBC, Fox Business, The Weather Channel, CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, Fox Sports 1, and Golf Channel. These multi-view choices fall under categories including “sports,” “business news,” “general news,” and “weather.” Additionally, the platform expands this functionality during significant events like the NBA and NHL playoffs. For subscribers who have purchased its NFL Sunday Ticket package, an advanced version of the multi-view option is made available, enabling viewers to select from numerous preset layouts containing multiple streams simultaneously.

Going ahead, Google plans to permit YouTube TV members to create their own multi-view setups with non-sport content, beginning initially with just a few channels.

The firm has not mentioned if the upcoming multi-view improvements will continue to set the order for the accessible streaming channels, and Google also hasn’t disclosed which channels will initially be part of this feature.

YouTube TV stands out among several providers for offering customizable multi-view features as an alternative to traditional cable television. While fuboTV provides highly flexible multi-view capabilities allowing viewers to select specific channels and customize their layout according to preference, this feature works exclusively on robust platforms such as the Apple TV and Roku Ultra. In contrast, YouTube TV extends its multi-view functionality across various devices including smartphones, tablets, and multiple types of streaming gadgets; although, these views are confined to layouts predetermined by YouTube TV itself.

DirecTV is yet another company that previously provided multiview capabilities. Their satellite television offering featured specific “mix” channels aimed at delivering news and sports content, along with supplementary pop-up channels focused on critical weather events and significant breaking news when necessary. In the previous year, DirecTV initiated trials of multiview functionality within their streaming applications.
