On Wednesday, Google and YouTube declared that they will allocate $3 million to assist in restoring technological resources and digital education for students, teachers, and schools affected by the January wildfires.
A portion of the donation will be directed to the Greater Los Angeles Education Foundation, which collaborates with the county Office of Education as a charitable ally, aiming to supply over 3,000 Chromebooks to students. Additionally, Google and YouTube plan to participate in a matching initiative set to commence this autumn via DonorsChoose.org. This effort seeks to furnish educators with essential resources and materials needed to restore their learning spaces.
This substantial donation from Google and YouTube will play a crucial role in reconstructing our educational spaces and fostering the next generation of American leaders and creators,” stated Rep. Judy Chu, D-Pasadena. “Although the journey ahead is lengthy, it’s encouraging to witness continuous backing from numerous sources for Altadena, Pasadena, and the broader Los Angeles area during these difficult times.
The donation announcement took place at Pasadena High School during an event where Google representatives conducted a coding session for students. This initiative aimed to impart fundamental computer knowledge and familiarize participants with FireSat, a worldwide satellite network leveraging AI tech to enable quicker responses from emergency services dealing with emerging forest fires.
By providing financial support and access to computer science and AI-developed technologies, we aim to guarantee that impacted students can keep progressing with minimal interruption,” stated Google Vice President Adam Stewart. “This will also enable them to develop technological answers to address significant community issues such as wildfires.” He added, “Nurturing the upcoming wave of tech pioneers is crucial for the prosperity of America.
A contribution of $3 million forms part of the total $15 million pledged by Google and YouTube to aid groups offering assistance for those affected by the fires in the region.
