Last year, my children had the opportunity to view a preview of the
Sloomoo Institute
In Los Angeles, with additional spots in Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, and New York, the Sloomoo Institute stands out as a vibrant attraction. Located in LA, this establishment resides in an enormous, vividly pink structure directly opposite The Grove on Fairfax Avenue.
However, let me start by explaining what the Sloomoo Institute actually is. This venue offers an engaging experience centered around the delight of playing with slime. Imagine a vibrant and tactile play area designed specifically for fun; here, visitors can prod, pull, and create their very own gooey concoctions. Essentially, it functions as both a workshop for fostering creativity and a space where people—kids and grown-ups alike—can indulge in sensory activities such as observing cascading streams of slime and listening to soothing ASMR noises. Since opening its doors back in 2019, Sloomoo has expanded to numerous sites nationwide and become the ultimate destination for all things related to this slimy pastime.
FYI:
At the Sloomoo Institute, visitors can jot down their ‘slime name’ on a nametag. For obtaining your slime name, just substitute each vowel in your name with two os. Thus, my children’s slime names would be Jook and Oooloovoo. (The term Sloomoo originates from ‘slime’.)
Sloomooversity
On April 14 of this year, Sloomoo made its launch.
Sloomooversity
, one-hour sessions where children learn the craft and science behind creating slime. These classes, distinct from the Sloomoo Institute experience, offer a blend of STEM education along with tips for taking care of slime. Kids receive all necessary materials to produce their own slime to bring back home. Each session introduces new types of slime textures, ensuring variety every time. Upon completion, young participants are awarded a Certified Slime Expert badge as recognition.
Describing my children as excited about slipping their arms into the slime wouldn’t quite capture it. Under the guidance of an instructor, they utilized an entire bottle of Elmer’s Glue and combined it with a mixture akin to Borax and water.
Keep stirring, stirring, and stirring until finally the concoction begins to transform into slime. (Should it spill onto your clothing—inevitable as it may be—a mix of white vinegar and water should remove it effectively.)
Through engaging children’s fascination with slime, Sloomoo seeks to foster a lasting passion for science among kids. As stated by the Sloomoo Institute, “74% of parents observe increased interest in science from their children who play with STEM toys, and these children are 2.5 times more inclined to explore STEM-related professions.”
Slomoversity sessions will take place every Monday and Tuesday following school hours, with the course content being updated periodically to maintain interest. Each session costs $25 per participant, which includes all taxes and fees. Admission is free for one accompanying adult per child; however, they won’t have access to make slime. Additional grown-ups who aren’t participating in the slime-making process will incur a charge of $5 each. After your workshop concludes, you may also choose to explore the exhibit area for an extra $20 per individual.
Our children adore The Sloomoo Institute, and Sloomooversity serves as an excellent post-school engagement for kids, offering lessons in science, art, and STEM subjects, which undoubtedly ignite their creativity.
