Opera Mini now includes a complimentary AI called Aria. This update introduces various artificial intelligence functionalities—such as fetching current data from the internet, offering research support, condensing content summaries, and generating images—all integrated within the browser without extra charges.
Opera states that the Android-powered browser, boasting over 100 million users, is recognized and valued for its distinctive features such as live football score updates and the integrated digital wallet called MiniPay, along with the recent addition of Aria.
“AI is quickly turning into a fundamental aspect of everyday online interaction, and there’s significant enthusiasm for AI solutions amongst South African users. Therefore, introducing Aria to Opera Mini is a logical enhancement for our most popular browser,” states Jørgen Arnesen, EVP Mobile at Opera.
By incorporating our integrated AI, Aria, we’re enthusiastic about discovering new ways this technology can improve the features relied upon daily by our South African users.
Addressing data costs
As internet accessibility continues to grow in South Africa, the expense associated with it remains disproportionately high relative to average incomes or GDP per capita. According to an Opera study conducted in March 2025, eighty percent of South African individuals believe that data costs are excessive, and nearly seventy percent stated they frequently exhaust their monthly data allocation before the month concludes.

Opera claims that its browser has significantly enhanced internet access throughout South Africa. The firm asserts that Mini’s advanced data-saving feature can decrease data consumption by as much as 90% when contrasted with leading competitors’ browsers. Over the last three years, Opera states it has helped save South Africans approximately $10 million worth of data, which equates to about 6 million gigabytes, thanks to their data compression technology.
Since 2020, Opera has been conducting free data initiatives aimed at South African users on the MTN network. These programs provide subscribers with 3 gigabytes of complimentary data monthly, applicable for all activities such as using Aria. Starting from 2022, the firm has allocated several million dollars towards sustaining these efforts within South Africa.
By integrating Aria into Opera Mini, users can enjoy the advantages of sophisticated AI technology without compromising their data usage. Optimized for low data consumption, Aria comes included in Opera’s complimentary daily data allowances available in South Africa.
The Aria browser AI will be integrated into Opera’s desktop and mobile browsers, providing a user-friendly chat-based interface for AI interactions. This enhancement allows for better engagement with features like information retrieval, as well as generating texts, codes, and images, and comprehending visuals.
Aria is driven by Opera’s proprietary Composer AI engine, leveraging both OpenAI and Google AI technologies to deliver highly pertinent responses. It also incorporates image creation via Google’s rapid Imagen3 model.
For the 24% of South African respondents who utilize AI tools multiple times daily, along with the 59% who depend on AI for educational reasons, Opera claims that Aria offers a user-friendly means to facilitate these tasks.
