MONTGOMERY, Ala. (

) – As the 2025 legislative session enters its final stretch, a handful of bills went through committee hearings Wednesday where lawmakers debated proposals and decided whether or not to advance those proposals to the House and Senate floors.
One of the bills debated, the “Back the Blue” bill, seeks to expand legal immunity for local law enforcement officers.
The Alabama Senate Judiciary Committee held a public hearing on the bill.
The proposal would allow officers charged with excessive use of force to ask for a pre-trial hearing to determine if their actions were justified.
If a judge determines it was justified, the officer would be immune from prosecution.
The measure
passed the House in March
, but still must make it to the full Senate before heading to the governor’s desk.
