‘Just crazy’: Neighbor escapes truck crashing into his townhome by minutes

DENVER (KDVR) — A truck crashed into the wall of a townhome, leaving one person in the hospital and a big mess behind.

It happened just before 2:30 p.m. Wednesday on East Colorado Boulevard and 35th Avenue. Fortunately, none of the three people who lived at the home were inside when the scary situation happened.

“I’m not even sure. I don’t know,” said Daniel Aragon as he tried to find the words. “It’s just crazy to think about.”

He was shocked to come back home and see a truck inside the place he and his two roommates had called home for the last eight months.

“This is my roommate’s room right here and it looks like his entire room is in our front yard right now. I’m assuming everything in his room is destroyed,” said Aragon. “Under the stairs, we had a closet under there where we kept our skis and snowboards, vacuum. Just whatever we can fit in there. I’m assuming it’s all gone.”

Fire crews were on scene for hours investigating and cleaning up the mess, making it safe.

A Denver fire spokesperson told FOX31 they had to extricate one of the three people inside the vehicle while it was still inside the home. They said trying to get the person out of the tight space while ensuring the safety of the firefighters was the biggest challenge.

One person was taken to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. A mattress, debris and the vehicle doors could all be seen in the front yard of the townhome.

“I rarely decide to go on runs. I just decided to go on a run today,” said Aragon.

He believes that’s what saved him. He left moments before the crash happened.

“I guess ten minutes before this happened, I decided to go on a run with all my workout clothes,” Aragon said. “Then I came back home 45 minutes later and it was a truck through the house.”

He is grateful no one was inside at the time.

“Around this time, I would be in the hallway behind the room and so would be my roommate; it’s not uncommon for us to be in that area,” said Aragon.

He and his other two roommates are now trying to figure out their next steps and where they are going to sleep.

Police say the driver of the vehicle, a woman, was cited for careless driving resulting in injuries. They don’t believe drugs or alcohol were factors. Right now, the crash is still under investigation and the traffic investigation bureau is looking to see if speed may be a factor.

Most of Aragon and his roommates’ belongings were destroyed. A
