on Wednesday, unexpectedly bringing up

Patrick Mahomes
and his wife,

, while discussing the controversial name of Washington’s

team.
Trump was asked about whether the
Washington Commanders
will return to their former name, the Redskins — a term widely viewed as offensive to Native Americans. Instead of directly addressing the question, Trump launched into a winding response that touched on various sports franchises and personalities. It comes after

“I spoke to people of Indian heritage that love that name, and they love that name,” Trump said, referencing the Redskins moniker. “I think it’s a superior name to what they have right now, it had heritage behind it and something special.” Meanwhile,

From there, Trump expanded his focus, invoking the names of other professional teams that reference Native American imagery, including the Kansas City Chiefs.
“The Kansas City Chiefs, they’re not changing their name,” Trump declared. “Great team, great people, great owners, great coaching, quarterback. I love the quarterback.”
That quarterback, of course, is Mahomes — a two-time MVP and three-time Super Bowl champion who has become one of the most recognizable faces in American sports. But Trump didn’t stop there.
“His wife is great, she’s been a big fan, the quarterback’s mother is incredible,” he continued. “I like that team. They’re called the Chiefs. And frankly, I see nothing wrong with it.”
While Trump didn’t elaborate on his apparent admiration for the Mahomes family, the unexpected detour raised eyebrows online, especially given Brittany Mahomes’ recent rise in visibility. She’s taken a more prominent public role over the past year, joining

’s “Quarterback” series alongside her husband and participating in multiple high-profile NFL events.
Though Trump has previously waded into the world of sports — often using athlete protests or league decisions as political talking points — his comments on Wednesday felt more like a stream-of-consciousness monologue than a policy stance.
As for the Washington Commanders, there has been no formal move to revert back to the Redskins name, though some within the fanbase continue to push for it. The franchise officially retired the name in 2020 after years of backlash and began playing as the Commanders in 2022.
Still, Trump’s comments once again stirred the pot in the ongoing debate around sports mascots and cultural representation — and this time, the Mahomes family got an unexpected mention along the way.
