Perry Grades Patriots’ Draft Pick: Addressing a Critical Need with Will Campbell

Following months of discussion, gossip, and conjecture, the New England Patriots maintained their stance.
the No. 4 pick
in the initial stage of the
2025 NFL Draft
And utilized it to choose LSU offensive tackle Will Campbell.

Was head coach Mike Vrabel, executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf, along with the rest of the Patriots’ team, correct in their selection Thursday evening?

Our Patriots insider Phil Perry gives this pick an A- grade.

Here’s his analysis:

“Drake Maye needed protection, and the Patriots got their young quarterback the best left-tackle option in the class. For months, Will Campbell has blown away team decision-makers with his competitiveness and intelligence.

Although his arms may be shorter compared to other highly drafted tackles from past years, he stands out as an exceptional athlete with the agility and power needed to counter pass rushers. This was evident during his three-year tenure as a starter and All-American at LSU.

He is seen as a key figure for a squad desperately requiring strong leadership. The score could have been slightly better if the Patriots managed to trade back and acquire more draft resources while securing their top selection. Nonetheless, this remains the wisest move for an organization critically lacking depth at left tackle.

On Thursday, during a press conference with reporters, Vrabel stated that Campbell is considered a “cornerstone player” and choosing him was a straightforward decision.

After addressing their need for an offensive tackle earlier in the first round, the Patriots have multiple options as they move into Day 2 of the draft on Friday. Their current selections include the No. 38 pick (second round), No. 69 pick (third round), and No. 77 pick (third round).

The remaining draft requirements for New England encompass a wide receiver, running back, edge rusher, linebacker, safety, and cornerbacks.
