WVU Reloads on Defense and Offense With Power Four and FCS Talent
After narrowing its roster following the Spring Showcase, West Virginia football has taken full advantage of the NCAA transfer portal, landing several key additions to strengthen both sides of the ball.
Head coach Rich Rodriguez and his staff are actively reshaping the depth chart with players ready to contribute right away.
Among the most notable pickups is Ben Bogle, a standout linebacker from Southern Illinois. The former FCS All-American racked up 87 tackles and 5.5 sacks in 2024, showing explosive ability and leadership.
On the edge, Eddie Kelly Jr., formerly of Missouri, brings SEC experience and physicality, with a resume that includes 20 tackles and a sack last season.
Skill Positions See Boost With Versatile Playmakers
On offense, WVU added Christian Hamilton, a former four-star wide receiver from North Carolina. He flashed big-play potential last season and brings speed and reliable hands to the Mountaineers’ passing game.
Tight end Grayson Barnes, a former Northern Illinois standout, also joins the mix, adding size and athleticism. Barnes caught 31 passes for 338 yards and four touchdowns in 2024 and provides a red-zone threat WVU previously lacked.
Secondary and Trenches Strengthened for 2025
To bolster the secondary, Nick Taylor, a transfer cornerback from Appalachian State, reunites with his former position coach, now at WVU. Taylor has three years of eligibility and brings upside after appearing in seven games as a freshman. In the trenches, Mickel Clay comes over from North Alabama. At 6’5″, 278 lbs, Clay started 12 games last year and adds much-needed depth to the offensive line unit.
With these portal additions, West Virginia is clearly focused on not only filling roster gaps but finding players who match their system and style.
More transfers could still arrive, but this spring’s haul already signals a strong reset for 2025.
