The Princess of Wales will attend the inaugural banquet of the reign of King Charles III. She will receive the president of South Africa.
Kate Middleton will be the first princess to wear a Princess of Wales tiara!
For Tuesday’s state banquet at Buckingham Palace, the 40-year-old royal donned her first tiara in nearly three years. The state banquet was part of the first state visit of King Charles III, who welcomed Cyril Ramaphosa (President of South Africa) to the UK.
The elegant evening was attended by Princess Kate in a white Jenny Packham dress combined with her favorite headdress for such occasions, the Queen Mary Lover’s Knot tiara.
The tiara, which has pearls suspended in diamond knots and is also made of diamonds, was also a favorite gift from Princess Diana, her mother-in-law. According to the court jeweler, the brilliant diamond is more than a century old. It was originally commissioned from Garrard in 1913 or 1914 for the Queen Mary. It is a replica of a tiara of Mary’s grandmother, Princess Augusta, the Duchess.

Kate wore Princess Diana earrings, which she recently wore on Remembrance Sunday. She also wore a bracelet from Queen Elizabeth’s jeweler. She completed the look with her Star, Sash, and Star of the Order of the Royal Family and Dame Grand Royal Cross of the Victorian Order.
Prince William, on the other hand, donned his suit with the garter star and the thistle star and three miniature medals to honor Queen Elizabeth’s three jubilees (gold in 2002 and 2012, a diamond in 2012, and platinum in 2022).
The state visit was mainly due to the COVID-19 epidemic. It is also the first time that the British royal family has organized a state visit since US President Donald Trump’s visit to the UK in 2019.
Kate wore a tiara at the Diplomatic Corps reception in December 2019. This annual event was attended by 1,000 guests, including High Commissioners and Ambassadors. A Lover’s Knot tiara was paired with a Nizam of Hyderabad necklace and a long-sleeved navy blue velvet dress by Alexander McQueen, her royal bridal stylist. 🇧🇷
Queen Camilla also wore the first tiara of King Charles’ reign at the state banquet. It was a sapphire and diamond tiara worn by Queen Elizabeth during a 2015 state visit to China with President Xi Jinping. To complement the headdress, she chose a blue dress.
Prince Edward, Sophie and the Countess of Wessex were also in attendance (wearing the aquamarine neck tiara), the Duke and Duchess of Kent, Lady Susan Hussey, and Annabel Whitehead, a former lady-in-waiting to Queen Elizabeth.
The banquet was held in the palace ballroom and featured grilled turbot, wild mushrooms, truffles with sorrel, Windsor ballotine, pheasant, artichokes, quince, and port wine sauce. The vanilla parfait was served with caramelized apples.
While President Ramaphosa was seated between King Charles, Kate, and Naledi Pandor, South African Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor was seated at the table with Queen Camilla and Prince William.
When guests arrived, King Charles, Queen Camilla, and the royal family inspected the table before departing.
More than 100 gilded silver candles are used to decorate the table. There are also displays of seasonal fruit and flower arrangements with silver-gilt centerpieces. Many of these were purchased by King George IV in 1903. The floral arrangements were made using seasonal flowers from Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle Gardens.
A state banquet can use over a thousand bowls. Each guest receives six glasses and a glass of champagne to toast the guests.
Both Prince William and Kate, both 40, were key players in the state visit. The couple had hosted President Ramaphosa at the Corinthia Hotel on behalf of King Charles. He was then escorted to Horse Guards Parade where he received a formal welcome.
