MOBILE, Ala. (
WALA
) – Tonight, the report on the fatal crash that killed 45-year-old Melissa Phillips said the driver who hit her, left the scene.
According to investigators, this all happened on April 12 shortly after 10 p.m. on Highway 163, just off Dauphin Island Parkway.
The crash report shows Phillips was hit on the side of the road, as she was walking in the same direction the car was traveling.
According to the crash report, after making impact, the driver called his parents, and they told him to check and see what he hit. So he got out and searched and saw mud on his headlight, figured he hit a deer and went home.
Investigators say the road was dark and not lighted.
The document also says the driver and his mother went back to the area to see if they could find what he hit, but did not find anything.
The report says Phillips husband and son found her body the next day.
This document says on April 15th, the following Tuesday, the day after our story aired, the driver came forward and spoke with a trooper and provided a written statement.
He was not charged with a crime.
Although the driver told troopers he saw mud on his light, the crash report also said parts of a headlight assembly were found near Phillips’ body.
