Boston police identified a suspect Tuesday morning in connection with the death of a family member and an attempted armed carjacking in Allston on Monday night.
Officers responded to 82 Glenville Ave., one block from Commonwealth Avenue, around 7:48 p.m. Monday after receiving a report of a disturbance, police said. Arriving officers found a victim, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Neighbors said they saw a shirtless man running down Glenville Avenue from the crime scene and heard someone yelling, “Run.”
Police said the man ran from officers when they arrived, jumped out of a window and led them on a chase around the neighborhood.
“During that time, officers deployed tasers, and eventually, after he attempted to steal a car in the neighborhood on Quint Avenue, they placed him under arrest,” Boston police Deputy Superintendent Paul McLaughlin said. “He was transported to Boston Police Headquarters.”
The suspect was apprehended near 50 Quint Ave. following the attempted carjacking, police said.
Police said they also recovered a weapon during the incident.
Omar Riaz, 26, is facing charges of murder, armed carjacking and resisting arrest. Prosecutors said Tuesday the victim was a family member.
“The elderly female was found inside her bedroom. She suffered significant head trauma, there was a bat in the area and also an area where the defendant ultimately fled, there was a bloody sword found a short distance away,” the prosecutor said.
Riaz did not appear in court on Tuesday.
