Ruptured gas main injures 2 Spire employees

GRANDVIEW, Mo. (KCTV) – A pair of Spire employees were injured after a 12 to 14-inch gas main was struck in the Grandview area Tuesday evening, April 22.

The Kansas City Fire Department (KCFD) responded at approximately 5:20 p.m. near 95th Street and Grandview Road. That’s just west of 71 Highway and Bannister Road.

Both workers hurt are employees of Spire Energy.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the day following the incident, one employee has been treated and released while the other remains inpatient.

We’re told this started when the water department was replacing water lines when they accidentally struck a Spire gas line.

Spire crews attempted to repair the line when the gas ignited, leading to the workers’ burns. The ignition is under investigation, but Spire Energy insists gas line markings were not the cause.

Once tending to the injured workers, KCFD crews stayed on scene to check surrounding homes for safety.

Spire crews closed the main and performed additional steps before restoring gas overnight.

As of noon, April 23, Spire reports a small number of customers remain without service as they work toward full restoration for all customers.
