The
New England Patriots
dynasty crumbled in the same way that bankruptcy occurs: gradually, then suddenly. The signs of decline have been apparent since the 2018 season, when Tom Brady and Bill Belichick dragged a decaying roster to one last Super Bowl championship.
Over the past two seasons, the Patriots finally hit rock bottom. New England finished the 2024 season with a 4-13 record for the second consecutive year, their fewest wins in a single season since 1992. Also, for the second straight year, the Patriots hired one of their former linebackers as their new head coach.
The Patriots currently hold the No. 4 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, but it’s going to take more than just one quality player to rebuild a quality roster. Patriots general manager Eliot Wolf and head coach Mike Vrabel have a long road ahead as they look to rebuild a team with few promising prospects.
Patriots may trade one of Drake Maye’s favorite targets for draft picks
Jordan Schultz from Fox Sports shared this news on Wednesday.
The Patriots are considering trading players who were part of the former coaching team, and wide receiver Kayshon Boutte has been mentioned as “a player to keep an eye on” in such a trade scenario.
During his tenure at LSU, Boutte exhibited moments of exceptional skill and speed, yet his uneven performance and behavioral issues led to him being selected in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft. In his first year, Boutte managed only two receptions for 19 yards, but he developed into one of the primary options for rookie QB Drake Maye in the subsequent season.
In his second year, the 22-year-old concluded the season with 43 receptions for 589 receiving yards along with three touchdowns from 68 targets across 15 games. His stats placed him just behind wide receiver Demario Douglas and tight end Hunter Henry in terms of receiving yardage. Boutte and Douglas stood out as the sole Patriots wideouts who recorded over 30 catches each.
Given Boutte’s performance, it’s improbable that New England would receive substantial compensation in exchange for him. Thus, he might prove more useful to Maye than whatever assets the Patriots could obtain through trading him. However, the rookie wide receiver will likely face reduced playing time due to the recent signings of Stefon Diggs and Mack Hollins as free agents. The team’s receiving corps also includes Ja’Lynn Polk, selected in the second round last year, along with Kendrick Bourne.
Heading into the NFL Draft, the Patriots possess nine picks at their disposal, which includes two each from the third, fifth, and seventh rounds.
