Vrabel’s Gaze Shifts as Patriots Embark on a New Chapter
The New England Patriots are officially embarking on a new era with head coach Mike Vrabel at the helm, and changes to the roster have already begun.
Following significant acquisitions during the free agency period such as Carlton Davis III and Milton Williams, Vrabel seems prepared to release players who were retained from the earlier administration. As reported by NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Patriots are considering trading away players signed under previous leadership. One player generating interest in potential trades is wide receiver Kayshon Boutte.
Boutte, who is only 22 years old, demonstrated potential during his time playing college football at LSU, but he has not yet made a significant impact in New England. During the 2024 NFL season, he accumulated 43 catches for 589 yards along with three touchdowns.
With two years remaining on his rookie deal—averaging around $1 million annually—he’s an affordable, high-upside option for teams looking to bolster their wide receiver corps.
The Patriots’ current wide receiver room is already crowded. The roster features rising talent like DeMario Douglas, recent draft picks JaaLynn Polk and Javon Baker, and the newly acquired veteran Stefon Diggs, who joined the team on a $69 million deal. Given that depth, it’s no surprise Vrabel is evaluating who fits into the team’s long-term plans—and Boutte may be the odd man out. If a trade doesn’t materialize, New England could opt to release him.
Is New England Expected to Select a Wide Receiver in 2025?
Boutte’s unclear future brings up queries regarding New England’s approach to the draft. As they head into the 2025 NFL Draft with multiple offensive requirements, wide receiver stands out prominently among these needs. Additionally, the team urgently requires reinforcements for their offensive line, particularly at left tackle, along with an imposing edge rusher. Luckily, the talent pool in next year’s draft is robust across all these positions.
Reports suggest a strong connection between New England and LSU offensive lineman Will Campbell as the fourth overall pick. If they choose this path, their chance to select a wide receiver will probably occur later during Day 2 of the draft.
In the second round, keep an eye on Tre Harris, Jalen Royals, Jayden Higgins, and Kyle Williams; each player has the potential to vie for playing time right away in Foxborough.
