Henderson State University Now Offers Aviation Courses for Aspiring Pilots Without Degrees

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — A modification implemented at Henderson State University last week ensures more individuals are “Reddie” for flight.

The aviation flight training program, now called the Arkansas Aviation Academy, signifies more than just a name alteration. It broadens flight instruction opportunities beyond merely those students officially registered at the institution.

A new law in Arkansas introduces incentives for using alternative fuels in aviation.

Currently, three courses are available for non-degree-seeking students. These encompass a commercial multi-engine additional training course, a tailwheel course, and a Certified Flight Instructor spin-training course.

These resources are accessible exclusively to individuals holding a commercial pilot certificate. According to Shannon Clardy, dean of the College of Aviation, Science, and Nursing at Henderson State University, their collection of 16 aircraft provides greater space for specialized training sessions.

That’s currently our main focus,” Clardy stated. “As our fleet expands, so too will our range of services.

It similarly addresses a staffing requirement within the aviation sector.

“All this experience will be necessary for pilots transitioning into the industry sector, regardless of whether they fly charter planes, transport cargo, or carry passengers,” Clardy clarified.

Taylor Scalzi transitioned from being a student to becoming an instructor. She finished her commercial multi-engine addon courses just last week.

“It truly expands my understanding of where I might venture and what I could accomplish,” Scalzi stated.

The first three courses can each be finished within a week. Housing options will be provided on campus for trainees throughout their seven-day instruction period. Scalzi expressed her enthusiasm about discovering whom the academy recruits.

“It’s quite an eclectic bunch. The age range spans anywhere from 18-year-olds to people in their 50s. Age isn’t a factor,” Scalzi stated.

An aviation advisory council is being established, and the academy is focusing on strengthening ties with alumni as well as exploring possible collaborations with various airlines. These efforts might facilitate securing employment opportunities.

Chad Cocroft is a junior HSU aviation major. He said the course is his “next step” in achieving his dream of becoming a career pilot.

“I enjoy it. I want to do it for the rest of my life,” Cocroft said.
