It marked its 20th anniversary on Wednesday.

The globe’s leading video-streaming site announced that it has surpassed hosting more than 20 trillion uploads, encompassing categories like music content, Shorts, and podcasts. Additionally, the company celebrated a decade since the launch of both YouTube Music and YouTube Kids services.

So far in 2025

The Nielsen “Media Distributor Gauge” report for March indicated that YouTube accounted for 12% of total television viewership and ranked as the leading reported media distributor in the United States.

In March, analysts from MoffetNathanson suggested that YouTube might have a valuation of up to $550 billion, noting its position as the top collector of television content within the US.

Last month, the firm announced an expansion of the trial program for their latest “Premium Lite” service to American customers at a rate of $7.99 monthly.

Milestones

YouTube stated that users posted more than 100 million comments on videos each day. Meanwhile, creators received heartfelt comments from approximately 10 million viewers daily.

Over 3.5 billion daily likes from users have been garnered by YouTube videos each day.

In February, the platform exceeded the 1 billion threshold for monthly active listeners of podcast content.

Over 300 music videos on YouTube have hit the billion view mark.

Fun facts

Psy’s ‘Gangnam Style’ was the first music video to reach the 1 billion view mark and later became the pioneer in hitting 2 billion views as well, leading to an overflow of YouTube’s view counter. Following this glitch, the company resolved the problem with a software update.

Currently, “Baby Shark Dance” holds the top spot as the most-watched YouTube video ever, having garnered more than 15 billion total views on the platform.

The top five music videos quickest to reach the 1 billion views milestone include: Adele’s “Hello” (which achieved this in 88 days); Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You” and Luis Fonsi featuring Daddy Yankee’s “Despacito,” both reaching the mark simultaneously after 97 days; followed by J Balvin and Willy William with “Mi Gente” hitting the benchmark in 103 days; and lastly, ROSÉ collaborating with Bruno Mars on their song “APT,” which reached one billion views in 105 days.

The inaugural video on YouTube, titled “Me at the Zoo,” was posted on April 23, 2005. It features one of the platform’s co-founders positioned beside the elephant exhibit at the San Diego Zoo.
