Decatur Public Library hosts senior resource fair

DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — More than 2 million senior citizens live in Illinois, and some of them may not know there are programs out there they can take advantage of.

That’s the goal of an annual resource fair. Seniors can get information on health plans and talk to insurance companies and other businesses like Ameren. Around 12 vendors showed up to the Decatur Public Library on Tuesday and people there were helping out senior citizens as they walked through.

The event focused on public health and making sure seniors are living their best lives. State Senator (D) Doris Turner has been sponsoring the event for the last 4 years.

“They need the information, they want to get the information, but they just may not have the opportunity to come out,” Turner said. “So, if you come out and gather it up and then, you know, you can go back and have a very meaningful conversation and explain things. And the other part about it is you may know exactly what that senior needs, the resources that they need to get more information about.”

She said the event gives people the opportunity to have a one-on-one conversation. This helps seniors get a better understanding of what’s going on. She said for people who missed the event, they can reach out to her district office in Decatur, or her Springfield office.
