KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Two Spire workers were injured Tuesday evening while repairing a ruptured gas main in Kansas City, Missouri.

The Kansas City Fire Department (KCFD) responded just before 5:30 p.m. to a reported gas line being struck in the area of East 95th Street and Grandview Road.

KCFD said on arrival, crews found a large 12-to-14 inch main that had been struck. Spire said in a statement Tuesday night that a third-party contractor working for another utility company hit a Spire gas main in the Grandview area.

As Spire worked to dig the area out for repair, a spark ignited the gas, according to KCFD.

Two Spire workers were injured and taken to area hospitals. KCFD said one worker has “significant injuries” but is stable, and another worker suffered minor injuries.

At the time of ignition, KCFD began evacuating the surrounding homes as a precaution.

Spire released an updated statement Wednesday morning about the incident:

Late yesterday afternoon, crews working for another utility hit a Spire gas main in the Grandview area. Our crews immediately responded and in working to resolve the issue, two of our employees were taken to a local hospital for evaluation. One has been treated and released, and the other is still being treated for injuries.

In the meantime, Spire crews closed the main to stop the flow of gas to begin repairs. That work concluded overnight and the area is now gas safe. To ensure the safety and reliability of the system, our crews will perform additional steps before restoring gas to the main. A small number of customers are impacted by outages and we are hopeful service will be restored soon.

Spire said in its original statement Tuesday night that crews were working to close the main to stop the flow of gas to begin repairs.

“In closing the main, we do anticipate a small number of customer outages,” Spire said Tuesday night.

Spire released an update at 9:20 p.m. which said the area was now “gas safe” and crews had started making repairs.

KCFD said it allowed the residual gas in the line to burn off; the fire went out after all the gas had been expelled.

After the fire was out and crews checked for hot spots, KCFD said Spire went back to work to fix the line. The gas will be turned back on once Spire completes the repairs.

No residents were injured, and no homes were damaged, according to the fire department.
