Two Spire workers were injured Tuesday evening after a ruptured gas main ignited near 95th Street and Grandview Road.
Crews with the Kansas City Fire Department arrived around 5:20 p.m. and discovered that a 12- to 14-inch gas main had been struck.
As Spire personnel began digging to make repairs, a spark ignited the leaking gas.
Firefighters initially allowed the gas to burn off before extinguishing any remaining hot spots.
Power and gas service in the surrounding area were shut off as a precaution.
Spire later confirmed that the incident was caused by a third-party contractor working for another utility.
Two Spire employees were taken to a hospital for evaluation.
“Late this afternoon, a third-party contractor working for another utility hit a Spire gas main in the Grandview area,” the company said in a statement. “Our crews immediately responded, and in working to resolve the issue, two of our employees taken to a local hospital for evaluation. In the meantime, crews are closing the main to stop the flow of gas to begin repairs. In closing the main, we do anticipate a small number of customer outages.”
Just before 9:20 p.m., a Spire spokesperson said the area was “gas safe” and that crews are beginning to make repairs.
As of Wednesday morning, Spire said that one employee had been treated and released from the hospital, and the other is still being treated.
